Heartworm disease has been found in dogs in all 50 United States. It is more common in warmer climates. Most of the dogs that I rescue whether on the streets as strays or in the city shelter are heartworm positive. Once infected it is expensive to treat and painful for the animal to go through. There are several brands of preventative medicines that dog owners can give to prevent heartworms. A once a month heartworm prevention medicine is a simple way to protect your dog from this disease.

“After caring for and treating a number of Tawana’s dogs over the past few years, it has become evident how abundant the number of dogs that are afflicted with heartworm disease that are out there. I would say three out of every four adult dogs that we tested were positive. This just goes to show you how important it is to put your dog on a heartworm preventative even if your dog is inside most of the time. All that it takes potentially is one mosquito bite to become affected and you will usually not start seeing any clinical signs of the disease until it is more advanced and at that point, treatment is more involved and not always successful. Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal disease that is easily and economically preventable and should be one of the main responsibilities in the care of any dog.”
